About Canal Suites
Our modern-style and comfortably furnished apartments breathe history and lives of the wealth of the past. The seven apartments, all renovated in 2016, contain carefully preserved ornaments. Wooden roofbeams provide for an aristocratic tinge. The antique windows offer a great view over the lively canal and the paved streets of the majestic Keizersgracht. The walls are decorated with the colorful and lush still lives of flowers and fruits by the Dutch painter Abraham Mignon (1640-1679), whose paintings were popular among Dutch and French kings. The wallpaper, designed by internationally renown artist Annet van Egmond, imagines ancient iron works and rambler roses.
The best way to get around in Amsterdam is by foot or bicycle. The boutique apartments are one block away from the lively shopping street Utrechtsestraat with its numerous cafes and boutiques. The former butter and dairy market, the popular Rembrandtplein is one of the busiest squares in terms of nightlife and only a 5-minute walk away. Dam Square, Rijksmuseum, Hermitage and the Albert Cuypstraat are all walking distance from the apartments.
Historical Building
This monumental Canal House at the Keizersgracht, or Emperors’ Canal, was built in 1672, during the Golden Age. At that time, Amsterdam experienced unprecedented growth as industry and trade were flourishing. To accommodate the many immigrants and attract the wealthy, the Keizersgracht was one of the three canals that were dug around the old town. The canal was named after Emperor Maximilian of Austria. The three canals became an icon of urban planning and architecture and have been added to the UNESCO World Heritage List. Famous painters, poets, merchants, and many other prominent personalities found their refuge at the Keizersgracht, including America’s second president John Adams. The design of the residences and warehouses were entirely left to the taste and the purse of its wealthy builders. That resulted in the great architectural diversity that characterizes the canals. Our Canal House is one of a series of houses designed by master carpenter Samuel van der Hagen in 1672, and among the best preserved.
